After 29 years experience as a drilling fluids engineer I find that the day rates for my services are declining in many countries. Many areas are begging for experienced men with full qualifications but are not willing to pay. I recently had an offer from the Emirates for $3500 a month when the going rate is $850+ a day! Yeah it is a lot of money but it is also work that many people can't handle or have the brains to do. They want western experience but pay Indian wages. I tell them "You get what you pay for".
I also get annoyed when some of my fellow engineers take positions that offer low wages when they should hold out for the correct day rate. This just makes it had for the rest of us. There is plenty of workout there so just take the good ones.
I'd like to hear form some of you on this.

Was recently offered $250/day to work in Saudi and $275/day to work in Sudan!! They must be joking. Fortunately I have work at present so not a big issue, however for those looking a real pain. Cheap Indian engineers are really killing the market. But what about quality?
yes, boss you are right but what is if somebody of your caliber leaving job like 250 to 275/ day but what about a yonger, fresh one who is looking just for experience
I worked in Saudi for over 10 years as a ME. Now after the many inexperienced ME's have wiped out the wells they offered me a live in country spot as their senior scientist with low pay & full benefits. Ha another joke. Quality you say? K mart has better.
Another recent laugh. Oman offered me a job @ USD 500 stating that the jobs were very easy with barbeques every night. Who the heck is going to work in these countries for the social graces? I believe some of them have gotten something nerve damaging into their water supply.
I realize new men need the experience but how can a man with 5 years working as an ME expect to have the same knowlwdge as a 15 or 30 years man. I just received another Mid East Offer for 450USD a day. The ad was so long with requirements it took an entire page. They wanted someone to do absolutly EVERYTHING but they did not want to pay. So now they will find a 3rd world country engineer for even less, work & treat him like a dog and then fire him after his FIRST semi major error. Since the line for employment is never ending they will continue in this fashion & the wells will cost 2X as much to complete, IF they can. I also want to make it very clear that I do not mean any disrespect when I say 3rd world nationals. I just need to distinguish between the two to make any sence of this conversation. All of the trainies I work with are from one or another of these countries & they are smart & hard working. The problem is their mild culture allows them to be exploited by many others. Such is life.
I hope many of you will be able to "Stick to your Guns" & refuse unreasonable pay.
